Vanuit hun residentie in AIR organiseren Encore en Sexes een reeks evenementen rond elektronische hardcore, geluidsextremisme en identiteitspolitiek in de ravecultuur. Ze bouwen de reeks op rond Liza’N’Eliaz (een transgender speedcore DJ in de jaren ‘90) en bundelen hun events onder de titel IS IT DARK?

In Het Bos brengen ze de digitale research (Encore Explorer), de output van hun performatieve Speed Core Jour Fixes in augustus, en hun mysterieze Brusselse Darkitis! samen in een grote tentoonstelling. Deze expo loopt van 27 tot 30 september en toont de resultaten van hun speurwerk naar restanten van Liza’N’Eliaz in centraal Europa. Voor de openingsnacht beloven ze speedcore extravaganza door leden en vrienden van Sexes en Encore.

"Finally the collectives ENCORE + SEXES are presenting the outcome of their residency at AIR Antwerpen. After looking extensively into the digital and real life traces of the speedcore legend Liza’n’Eliaz, the collectives produced art works during their stay in Antwerpen. The works and the digital research - the EE (ENCORE EXPLORER)- can be seen at the exhibition space September 27th -30th in Het Bos.

To include all aspects of fascination for Liza, the 4 day show starts with a line-up that resonates Liza (DJ HVAD, laserpoodle, orphan fairytale, GTUK, Hiele, E-dipo The Motherfucker), continues with a panel talk on the 28th about Liza’s biography + the impact of speedcore and will end with an experimental theatre play based on Liza’s biography. "

After the talk series SCJF (speedcore jour fixes) at AIR Antwerpen that looked into different aspects of the project, the panel will conclude on the development of the last 3 month.

After a short introduction to the ENCORE EXPLORER by ENCORE members Tea Palmelund + Merle Vorwald, the first block is a conversation with Pieter Kuyl (Stockhousen/ influencer) about Liza’s biography and the impact + legacy the early 90’s techno scene (in Antwerpen).

The second block will look deeper into the sonic potentials and the subcultural context of gabber plus it's subgenre speedcore and Liza’s position within the scene. The talk is held by Bianca Ludewig (urban anthropologist + popmusic researcher, University of Vienna) and Federico Chiari (journalist + hardcore techno expert, Milano). The talks are moderated by Merle Vorwald.

‘Music is a tool for social change... In those days music was the only way you could access alternative information.’

Don Letts was ooit resident DJ in de roemruchte Londense club The Roxy en bekeerde eigenhandig een hele generatie punks tot de reggae. Letts regisseerde ook meer dan 30 documentaires en muziekvideo’s en verzorgt het programma Culture Clash op BBC radio.

In Het Bos geeft hij tekst en uitleg bij zijn documentaire over de mythe en realiteit van punks en dreads die samenkwamen voor een ‘Punky-reggae-party’. Hij gebruikte hiervoor nooit vertoonde, veertig jaar oude opnames met onder meer The Sex Pistols, Big Youth, The Clash, Culture, The Slits en Linton Kwesi Johnson. Na afloop brengt hij in de concertzaal een DJ-set.

Don gives a talk and screens his documentary on the myth and the reality of punks and dreads coming together for a 'punky-reggae party'. Using footage shot on Super-8mm 40 years ago. This previously untold story includes: The Sex Pistols, Big Youth, The Clash, Culture, The Slits, Linton Kwesi Johnson and many more

De legendarische filmmaker, muzikant en DJ Don Letts legt na zijn verschijning in Het Bostheater tijdens Wish List nog een aantal platen op in de concertzaal en vormt zo Het Bos om tot een punky reggae party waar u de stijve benen kan strekken.

Het Antwerpse Blackbird Sound trilt daarna verder de nacht in.
Blackbird Sound werd in 2015 officieel opgericht na al decennia te hebben samengespeeld. Ze maakte in den beginne vooral de Izzy Maze onveilig maar vond snel een groot publiek in Antwerpen met hun eigen soundsystem. Ze zoeken vooral de roots op van Reggae, Dub en Rocksteady.

After his appearance on Wish List in the theater of Het Bos, legendary filmmaker, musician and DJ Don Letts will turn Het Bos into a punky reggae party by spinning some records.

Antwerp based collective Blackbird Sound will shake you through the night afterwards.
